Lumbini is the birthplace of Gautam Buddha (born ith the 7th or 6th century BC) who is the founder of Buddhism. Based on the major events in the life of Gautam Buddha, Lumbini is main Buddhist pilgrimage site other sites are Bodh Gaya (enlightenment), Sarath (first discorse) and Kushinagar (death). UNESCO was granted Lumbini as World Heritage in 1997.
